New Boundary Technologies Prism Pack Product Interview
with Jim Hove, Chief Technology Officer and Val O'Reilly, Prism Product Manager

1. When people ask you what does Prism Pack do, what do you tell them?

Prism packages any software for deployment to any Windows PC or laptop anywhere in the world.

2. Can you provide a quick history of Prism Pack for us?

Prism Pack is 5th generation software packaging technology. Prism Pack was first introduced to the market as PictureTaker in 1997. The developers of Prism Pack created one of the first software distribution tools on the market (released in 1992) called LAN Escort. In a continuing effort to simplify the complex task of Windows desktop administration, those same developers are working on Prism Pack today; their knowledge of Windows has evolved with Windows. It is this expertise that makes Prism Pack extremely thorough in its package-creation process. Packages created with Prism Pack produce the highest installation reliability available today. The Prism Pack interface for creating and editing distribution packages is very simple to use. Packages can be installed on everything from Windows 95 to Windows Server 2003.

3. What would you say is Prism Pack's strongest feature?

Its configuration-based scripting language. Configuration-based scripting allows an administrator to have full access the hardware, software and network configurations of target computers. This feature gives administrators complete control over deployments by enabling them to build logic into distributions for determining which computers should receive a package based on very detailed configuration criteria. For instance, the language contains built-in support for identifying which computers need a security patch and then installing that security patch as needed.

4. What do you believe to be the most underrated or misunderstood feature?

Smart Variables/Paths Editor. Smart variables together with the Prism paths editor make it easy to customize a single deployment package for a diverse environment. Instead of hard-coding information into a package like user name or even installation location, an administrator can turn such information into a variable that is resolved based on each unique end-user environment.

5. What do you believe makes Prism Pack stand out when compared to other products?

Ease of use and reliability of installation packages.

6. What do you see in the future for Prism Pack?

Prism Pack will bring its proven packaging technology to administrators grappling with the growing need to bring handhelds and other remote computing devices under control of the corporate IT department.
